AS an outstanding brand of China’s traditional Chinese medicine industry, Beijing Tong Ren Tang has always followed the dictates of its founders from 350 years ago to provide safe and reliable TCM products and services to customers. In the early 1990s, it started to venture going global with attention paid to localization on the overseas market. Thanks to its efforts, the brand is now earning fame internationally.

In February 2019, after an eight-year effort, Tong Ren Tang developed Yufeng Ningxin Tablet, a flagship drug for high-blood pressure, and got its market admission to the EU as an OTC botanical drug. In the face of the EU’s high standards and strict procedures, Tong Ren Tang kept improving itself accordingly with the help of professionals from the Netherlands, which was the key to its accession to the EU market following its approval by the Medicines Evaluation Board of the Netherlands.
During its localization drive, Beijing Tong Ren Tang’s production line obtained the GMP certification of Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, halal certification, and Israel’s kosher certification.
The GMP certification of the EU was received in August 2016, ranking it among the few Chinese enterprises that hold such a certification.
The Hong Kong production and R&D center is the first one of its kind outside the mainland. The center attained the ISO 22000 and HACCP certifications, two high-level international certifications, which laid the foundation for production of its healthcare products for overseas consumers.
So far, the famous brand has been officially registered in more than 100 countries and regions.
In recent years, as a TCM ambassador, Tong Ren Tang has grown together with the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and set up a network spanning five continents. Since 2018, it gained more influence in the international arena by participating in such events as the Silk Road Business Summit in Zhangjiajie, the Belt and Road activities sponsored by the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, the China-CEE “16+1” Capital Mayor Summit, and the second Chinese Cultural Festival in Cyprus.
On the other hand, it has also been hailed as a responsible company due to holding the second International Chinese Medicine Cultural Festival in Hong Kong as well as the the third “Walk with Heart, Walk with Love” activity for the betterment of people recovering from strokes.
Tong Ren Tang extended its business to South Africa two years ago. Its clients have steadily risen to over 10,000 at the present, catering to a broad variety of customers ranging from dignitaries and celebrities to ordinary people.
During the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, overseas reporters from a couple of media outlets went to the stores of Tong Ren Tang to learn about its profound cultural background and contemporary development. Meanwhile, the third open day of capital-based state-owned enterprises also released a South Africa route for visitors. Visitors were amazed by what they learned about Tong Ren Tang’s rapid development during their on-site visit.
In May 2018, while celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Kingdom of Cambodia, their respective capitals became twin cities. On this occasion, the Tong Ren Tang branch in Cambodia organized an activity for friendly exchanges between the peoples of both countries.
With its ambition changing from “Tong Ren Tang is where Chinese people are” to “Tong Ren Tang is where healthcare needs are,” its products and services have gone to five continents to help more people. It will continue to go global with an improved industrial chain to be a true bridge of people-to-people exchanges.
