Helan Mountain Rock Paintings

Yinchuan has a large number of rock paintings depicting the activities and thoughts of the ancient inhabitants, the most representative of which are the Helan Mountain rock paintings. They are unique in style, with animals, figures, weapons, plants, tools, buildings, and various abstract symbols, recording details and events of the lives of the original clan tribes, such as grazing, hunting, sacrificial ceremonies, and fighting on the vast land of the Ningxia Plain. The artistic style is similar to that of Chinese Neolithic pottery and primitive sculpture. It reveals the animism, fetishism, and totem worship of the primitive clans. It explores the complex and often ritualistic relationship of humans with each other and nature, and its impact on their lives.

Shahu (Sand Lake)

About 56 kilometers north to Yinchuan, Shahu is a place where water meets the desert. A stunning contrast between the golden sand and the clear lake sculpts the landscape. Taking in the breathtaking view while traveling on the ferry across the lake, it is easy to forget that the western part of China is known for its drought. An odd serenity permeates the landscape, which simultaneously bursts with life due to the variety of aquatic life found in the lake and the bleak desolation that surrounds it. Due to the influx of groundwater of the Yellow River, it remains filled with water year round, providing a much needed respite for the surrounding arid regions. As the lake originates from streams from the upper reaches of the Yellow river, the water is pristine and unpolluted, making for fine fish and shrimp to flourish.
