The ongoing exhibition “Art in the Heart of Perseverance” organized by PIFO Gallery in 798 Art Zone, Beijing, has attracted art lovers of traditional ink wash paintings in droves.
The exhibition, focusing on the latest works of eight contemporary traditional Chinese painting artists born in the 1970s, displays their ink wash painting and installation works which convey their distinctly individual understanding and exploration of expression with ink brushes in terms of media, language, form, and themes and how they interact with contemporary society.

The art of ink wash painting is one of the major traditional Chinese art forms. The theme of the exhibition is “heart like a mountain,” reflects the stance and attitude of the Chinese artists towards modern life. With their thinking on culture and vivid insights into life, the artists and their works display the unique charm of Chinese ink painting to art lovers from home and abroad.

Yin Shuyu, a celebrated artist from the Chinese National Academy of Arts (CNAA), mentioned in his interview with China Today, that his work is grounded in depiction of farmhouses, scenery featuring idyllic fields, wild flowers, and fauna that are common sights in daily lives. With the writing brush and ink, he seeks to capture the feel of a peaceful, tranquil rustic life, evoking childhood memories about the countryside.
Tree, Wu Xuelian, exhibited at the exhibition “Art in the Heart of Perseverance”.
Wu Xuelian, another artist featured in the exhibition, prefers to ink trees with shed leaves. In her eyes, there are many types of materials and techniques for painting expression, and she has a special penchant for mineral pigments. Her exhibited works feature stark palettes of black, white, and gray tones, depicting scenes such as trees silhouetted against minimalist backgrounds. Wu finds fulfillment when her work is found soothing by those seeing it.
Other artists featured in the exhibition include Du Xiaotong, Hao Shiming, Pan Wenxun, Sun Hao, Tan Jun, and Wang Jian.
