Sanjiang – Home of the Dong People

Danzhou Island is a small enclave encircled by the Duliu River. Surrounded by mountains, the island is tranquil, as if forgotten by time. It used to be the county seat, with a history of over 400 years. Here you will find ancient northern arches, a centuries-old academy, a guildhall of Fujian and Guangdong artisans, and the ancient county government site. The island is now home to over 200 households, who belong to five ethnic groups – the Dong, Miao, Yao, Zhuang, and Han.

Paddling a boat and stepping onto the island will allow you to enjoy its tranquility under a high canopy of old banyan trees, midst large tracts of grapefruit and tall Cyatheaceae forests that date back to the time of dinosaurs. This verdant world is adorned with blossoming camellias. The dappled ancient city wall and forsaken construction only add to the sense of mystery.

This recalls an article that posed the question, “Where do we place our souls?” Methinks, Sanjiang might be a perfect repose for the soul...
