New Metro Lines Scheduled to Open In Beijing to Help Ease Its Traffic Woe

Beijing will open a new metro line and new segments of two lengthened lines later this month, which will help ease the city's chronic congestion, local authorities said on Nov. 30.

The soon-to-be opened lines, including a new No. 9 Line, the second phase of No. 8 Line and the first phase of No. 15 Line, will bring the city's total metro length to 370 km, according to Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport.

The No. 8 Line, or the Olympic Branch Line, which runs south to north, will stretch into the northern parts of the city with six more stations. The line is expected to transport 200,000 passengers per day, according to Beijing Subway Company.

The city government has been taking various measures to combat the worsening traffic situation in the city, said Wang Zhaorong, deputy chief with the city's transport commission.

As a result, Beijing's traffic woes have slightly eased, Wang said.
