CAS Announces Its Goals for the Decade
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China's leading science research body, has formulated "Innovation 2020," a 10-year program targeting key areas of space science, information technology, energy and health. The program seeks to provide stronger scientific support for China's development by making breakthroughs in key fields and nurturing top-notch scientific talent. According to CAS Secretary General Deng Maicun, under the program's initial projects the academy will set up research centers, including a space science center, a center for clean and efficient use of coal, and a research center for geoscience instruments. By 2020, more than 5,000 top scientists will work under the CAS, according to the plan. The CAS also slates the creation of three major science parks respectively in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong, aiming to accelerate the conversion of research outcomes into products available on the market. |
