BPA Bottle Banned for Baby Use

Following a ban that came into effect on June 1 on production of Bisphenol A (BPA) baby bottles, six Chinese administrations, including the Ministry of Health, extended the ban to importation of this product. The compound BPA is widely used in making hard, clear plastic and is commonly found in food and drink containers. Last year the European Commission decided that from March 1, 2011, production would be halted, and from June 1, 2011, the sale of BPA-based polycarbonate baby bottles would no longer be permitted in EU member states. The commission responded to fears that the compound affects the development and immune response systems of young children. However, the edict signed by the six Chinese administrations states there is no solid evidence that the BPA in food containers is detrimental to human health, but has forbidden it in milk bottles for babies, a highly vulnerable group, as a precaution.
