National Intangible Cultural Heritage List Swells to 1,219

China now considers 1,219 cultural practices nationwide to be "intangible" national treasures after adding 191 items to a new list published by the State Council. Folk literature, traditional music, dancing, opera, arts and crafts, folk customs, acrobatic performances and the traditional medicine of minority ethnic groups have made the additions. The new list has focused on intangible cultural practices of the minority ethnic groups. Several festivals of minority ethnic groups, including the Tibetan New Year Festival, stand out among the new entries. The State Council published its first list of 518 items in 2006, including the Spring Festival, Peking Opera, acupuncture and moxibustion, the Legend of White Snake and Shaolin Kungfu. The second batch of 510 items was unveiled in 2008.
