According to Liang Zhipeng, deputy chief of New Energy and Renewable Energy Department, National Energy Administration (NEA), solar energy will form a viable market in five to ten years. He made the prediction at a seminar on power generation from solar energy co-sponsored by NEA and Asian Bank. Liang said that the cost of solar power generation has fallen below RMB one per kWh (land cost not reckoned), but is still higher than that for electricity from coal burning. The industry can survive on state subsidies, but China hopes it can cut the cost of solar power production to below RMB 0.8 per kWh in five years, which would bring the price of power from solar energy to roughly the same level as that of fossil fuels. Global capacity for solar power generation had exceeded 40 million kW by the end of 2010, an increase of more than 15 million kW from the previous year.
