Progress Made in Driverless Car
In July, the self-driving Hongqi HQ3 car, developed by a team led by Prof. He Hangen of National University of Defense Technology, set a record of 87 kilometers per hour during an on-road test. The drive was made on the 286-kilometer expressway linking Changsha and Wuhan, in complete automatic mode. This achievement shows that China, which started its research into driverless cars in the 1980s, is now an international forerunner in the creation of automated vehicles that can operate in complex surroundings. Rather than relying on a GPS device to navigate, the Hongqi HQ3's embedded intelligence and decision-making systems use information from sensors to pilot the vehicle through traffic typical on public roads, without human intervention.
