“International Way” of Telling Stories
“Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf may not score high on artistic achievement. Some critics deem its storyline rough and childish. However, the market response proves that the seemingly hopeless efforts of the wolves and the perpetual triumph of the goats has not only enchanted children, but also attracted large numbers of young adults,” says Yang Xueping, manager of the Publicity Department of the CPE. According to a survey launched by the CPE, 20 to 30 percent of the movie’s box office revenue came from the “urban whitecollar set.”
“The amusing tales guarantee good box office earnings,” says Yang Xueping. “The movie’s animators in our company only wished the story would touch audiences and entertain them. So, from its conception, they watched many classic American and European cartoons, paying special attention to the way they told the story. In fact many core members of the production team were in their 20s, so grew up with American, European and Japanese cartoons. They are familiar with the ‘international method’ of storytelling, and full of imagination and passion themselves,” he adds.
The young production team found that the characters in classic cartoons were adored by both children and adults. Characters must look cute and a bit funny. More to the point, contradictions are indispensable, like the relationship between mice and their natural enemy, cats. “Our animators really mulled over setting up such opposing natures or natural enemies like ants and elephants, rabbits and tigers. But eventually they went with goats and wolves. The natural tension makes for the amusing scenes that led to the film’s success. Here, the wolf is fierce enough to vow to eat up all the goats. The funny thing is that any action he takes ends up in failure. And fierce as he is, he is hen-pecked by his wife. Their stories are hilarious,” comments Yang Xueping.
The wolf may be the eternal underdog, but it earns him great public sympathy. On Tianya (www.tianya.cn), China’s largest online social community, more netizens related to the wolf. “The wolf is technically a ‘bad guy’, but he has a soft side – treating his difficult wife so well despite the fact she controls him mercilessly and often argues with him,” some netizen posted. Other aspects of the wolf’s character inspire fans to point out that even though the wolf suffers countless defeats he never gives up, and that his resourcefulness keeps him dreaming up new tricks to ensnare the goats, which is a spirit that’s worth studying. Mr. Dong, a cartoon fan, comments, “I like cartoons very much, but the tradition in earlier Chinese cartoons was to divide the characters into good guys and bad guys, and the plots lacked tension and imagination. Another weakness in the older variety is a focus on moralizing rather than making life lessons entertaining; such obvious preaching makes cartoons unappealing.”
Dialect Editions Beat Disney
Besides the lively plots, the movie’s marketing strategy can be thanked for its box office success.
The distributors drew from operating experience abroad. “Usually professional foreign movie distributors would consult with relevant manufacturers in advance of release regarding derivative products. They would get those products to market by the film’s release date. Then more derivative products would be promoted as episodes of the spin-off TV series are broadcast. We followed their operating model. The difference was that it took longer for us to persuade some of these famous manufacturers to cooperate with us initially,” says Liang Shanyi.
From the close of 2006, Liang Shanyi had been communicating with manufacturers on the design and production of the movie’s derivatives, a line up of books, audiovisual products, toys and clothes. Liang wanted to persuade some big-name publishers or manufacturers to get in on the ground floor, but few of them felt confidence was warranted based on the characters in the original domestic TV series. Most of them preferred to make derivatives for media heroes in well-known foreign cartoons so that there was less risk involved. “Now the success of the movie has brought manufacturers to our door, but we remain cautious in evaluating their qualities. We insist on selecting trustworthy partners who will ensure the quality of our derivatives,” says Liang.
The release of the Cantonese edition of the movie also boosted the buzz. Many critics in film circles point out that even Disney didn’t have what it takes to make the dialect editions of its cartoons on the Chinese market, but Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf nailed it. It is the first case in the history of Chinese animation.
All the effort has paid off in spades. According to statistics, in the three days following the Pearl River Delta debut of the Cantonese edition, the box office in the region soared to over US $1.4 million, representing one third of the nationwide total.
