China Asks for More Nuclear Power Plants

China is boosting its number of nuclear power plants. Twenty-four projects currently under construction, located mainly in coastal provinces like Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang and Liao-ning, will provide a capacity of 25 million kW. At present, the country has 11 nuclear reactors, with a combined installed capacity of 9.07 million kW. China plans to have 40 million kW of installed nuclear capacity by 2020. Currently, at least 80 percent of the nation's electricity is produced by thermal power plants, and the installed capacity of nuclear reactors accounts for only 1.99 percent of the total capacity.
