Seascape

Nantong's Qidong is a good place to see and hear the pristine beauty of the sea. Flocks of seagulls hover around fishing boat masts on the shore. I wanted to board one and get close to the water birds, but my local guide told me that women are not wanted on fishing boats. Instead, he offered to take me to a seaside "disco." So I boarded an ox-drawn cart that took me to a tidal beach. As I walked on the wet sand, I found my weight forced clams out of sand beneath my feet. It was then I understood the "disco dance."

I am told the sun also rises over a fantastic seascape at Yuantuojiao where the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and the Yangtze River meet. Unfortunately, the morning I was there the sea was shrouded in mist.

Nantong has a lot to offer any visitor: evergreen hills, wonderful museums, fascinating potted landscapes, and enchanting folklore.
