Alfred Y. Cho (aka Zhuo Yihe) was recently inducted in the 2008 US Patent and Trademark Office's (USPTO) National Inventors Hall of Fame. The 72-year-old expert in electrical engineering is called the "father of molecular beam epitaxy" (MBE). The material he created was applied to produce a dozen high performance microwave electronic and photoelectronic instruments. MBE has also been used extensively in mobile phones and CD/DVD players.
Born in 1937 in Beijing, Cho gained his doctorate at Illinois University in 1968, and is now Adjunct Vice President of Semiconductor Research at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs. The National Inventors Hall of Fame was created by the USPTO and the American Intellectual Property Law Association in 1973. |
