There were 169.88 million motor vehicles in China at the end of 2008, up 10.11 million on 2007, averaging 30,000 a day, according to the Ministry of Public Security statistics. Passenger cars saw the highest increase, at 20 percent. The increase of private cars slowed down, which was 4.52 percentage points lower than in the year 2007. They amounted to 129.34 million at the end of 2008, accounting for 76.14 percent of the total vehicles. The government recently halved the purchase tax on cars with less than 1.6 liter engines to five percent to encourage purchases of low-emission cars.
