Fruit: Enlarged Exports
During the past five years, Guangxi has vigorously actualized top-notch fruit projects. Its fruit export volume has reached 500,000 tons, and involves over 10 varieties. In 2007, the total fruit output in Guangxi was 6.9726 million tons, putting it fifth in China. Yield of litchis, longans and bananas ranked second in China. Gross output value was RMB 12.385 billion, adding to per capita farmers' incomes by RMB 294.
Cassava: New Income Source
Guangxi has energetically spread the fine cassava strains and planting technique. Its cassava planting area and yield, as well as starch output, account for around 70 percent of China's total, making it the country's largest cassava producing zone. In 2007, the planting area was 290,000 hectares with the fresh cassava output reaching 6.5 million tons. The total yield of dry cassava was 1.559 million tons with a value of RMB 3.118 billion. Now, there are nearly 8 million farmers in 83 counties and cities growing cassava. Since Guangxi has been listed as an ethanol production base with an annual output of 1 million tons, the cassava industry has become the new income growth engine for farmers. Income rises have been particularly steep for farmers in mountainous areas, demonstrating efforts to enhance Guangxi's agriculture have not been fruitless. Overall Guangxi has become a haven of rich grain crops, luscious fruits, and abundant vegetative growth. |
