In 2008, Qinhuangdao City is strengthening the construction of collection/distribution channels to the port, and studying various ways to increase new channels.

"Moving the port eastward" will be a key to development in coming years. The strategic planning will cost tens of billions of RMB, including moving the existing coal and ore wharves to the eastern port area, and moving the container wharf and bulk goods wharf to Shahe Port Area. The wharves will move from urban areas to suburban districts.

Following the relocation of the wharves, Qinhuangdao's road transformation will start. It will readjust the railway pattern of Qinhuangdao and Shanhaiguan to implement the transformation of local rail lines. It will actively promote the westward move of the Nan-Long Railway and the construction of the passenger rail line of the Tianjin-Qinhuangdao Railway. This will leave space for the key projects of Qinhuangdao's urban construction.

At present, Qinhuangdao Port has ships sailing to more than 80 countries and regions. It has opened four regular container navigation routes to Hong Kong, Japan and the Republic of Korea. It has built sister-port ties with Japan's Tomakomai Port and Australia's Newcastle Port. A multifunctional, comprehensive, modern port is taking shape.
