Henan to Build Breeding Bases for Endangered Wildlife
Central China's Henan Province plans to build seven breeding bases for endangered wildlife over the next five years, according to the provincial forestry authorities. The breeding bases, located in the cites of Jiyuan, Jiaozuo, Sanmenxia and Xinyang, will mainly take on missions to save endangered wild animals such as the rhesus monkey, the snow leopard, certain breeds of swans, the crested ibis, the pronghorn and various wild plants such as the Chinese yew. The province will also establish 11 rescue and breeding centers for other wild animals during the same period. A second wildlife survey has also been kicked off at the provincial level and aims to look into the populations and geographical distribution of wildlife. The first wildlife survey in 2003 showed that Henan is home to 15 species that require national grade-one protection and 79 species that demand grade-two protection. |
