For over five decades, Lorin Maazel, who will be conducting this New Year's extravaganza, has been one of the world's most respected and sought-after conductors. In 2010-11, he completed his fifth and final season as the inaugural Music Director of the opera house at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, Spain. Music Director of the New York Philharmonic from 2002-2009, he assumes the same post with the Munich Philharmonic at the start of the 2012-13 season. He is also the founder and Artistic Director of a new festival held on his farm property in the US state of Virginia, the Castleton Festival. This festival was launched to high acclaim in 2009 and is expanding its scope nationally and internationally into 2012 and beyond.
