The status of women is a key indicator of advances made in the continuing betterment of human civilization. Without progress towards further alleviating the historical gender-based subjugation of womankind, progress in society in general would be impossible. And without the earnest participation of women, goals for sustainable development cannot be achieved.

Vice President Xi Jinping made these remarks at the opening of the International Forum on Women and Sustainable Development in Beijing. Vice President Xi praised highly of efforts by governments around the world, international organizations such as the UN, corporations and civil and social organizations in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable economic development.
