China’s Deepening Reforms – An Interview with Chief Executive Leung Chun Ying of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

Hong Kong Poised for

New Glory

China Today: Could you please give your views on Hong Kong’s development prospects?

Mr. Leung: With regards to our country’s road of deepening reform and opening-up, Hong Kong is neither an observer nor simply a beneficiary, but an active participant and contributor. As a special administrative region of our country, Hong Kong will bring the advantages of “one country, two systems” into full play. It will, together with mainland provinces and municipalities, seek common development. By seizing opportunities created by our country’s development and taking advantage of preferential policies toward Hong Kong, it will do its utmost to make greater contributions to the development of Hong Kong and China as a whole.

Hong Kong is a cosmopolis, and a blend of both Oriental and Western cultures. With a sound and stable financial market, free and open economic system, as well as broad international connections, Hong Kong can act as a “super liaison” in economic and trade exchanges between China and the world. Hong Kong will help the mainland to attract international capital, talents and expertise. It will moreover help mainland enterprises to go global, expand the international market, and provide an optimal platform for international firms with their eye on the mainland market.

For more than a century the Chinese nation has had a “Chinese dream.” The SAR government is willing to contribute to our country’s further development and progress, and to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. All these efforts will create new glory not just for Hong Kong, but for our country in its entirety.
