Jingdezhen, long revered as the millennium-old porcelain capital, has nurtured generations of ceramic artists, shaping the evolving legacy of Chinese ceramic art through continuous inheritance and innovation.
Ranked among the seventh batch of Chinese arts and crafts masters and a nationally recognized inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of famille rose porcelain painting, Fu Changmin stands both as a torchbearer of Jingdezhen’s centuries-old ceramic lineage and a pivotal innovator in contemporary famille rose art. In her artwork, she follows the creative philosophy of “upholding tradition while pursuing innovation,” blending profound expertise in traditional Chinese painting with time-honored famille rose techniques to reveal the charm of Chinese ceramics with each stroke
Born into a renowned ceramic artist family in Jingdezhen, Fu became immersed in the craft at an early age. Her grandfather, Fu Tishou, dedicated his career to ceramic design and education. Her father, Fu Yaosheng, was a celebrated master of Chinese painting and ceramic art, acclaimed for his achievements in figure painting, landscapes, blue-and-white porcelain, and famille rose works. Surrounded by this artistic milieu, Fu began a systematic study of traditional art that included sketching, watercolor, Chinese painting, and ceramic decoration with her father.
In 1986, she began pursuing advanced studies at the China Academy of Art, where she learned from distinguished landscape painters such as Kong Zhongqi and Zhuo Hejun, further refining her understanding of the techniques and poetic essence of Chinese landscape painting.
Over four decades of artistic practice, Fu has forged a distinct artistic language. Her figurative works inherit the familial tradition of famille rose classical painting while breaking free from conventional decorative formulas. Through simplified compositions, soft and muted palettes, and a refined literati elegance, her works portray oriental women with grace, poise, and subtlety.
The figures she depicts possess vivid expressions – imbued with the classical charm of traditional beauty paintings yet resonant with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. In her landscape creations, Fu transposes the brushwork and poetic atmosphere of Chinese ink painting onto the ceramic surface. Mountains, clouds, forests, and mist come to life upon the porcelain with her fluid and intricate brushstrokes, fully embodying traditional Chinese landscape.
To Fu, ceramics are far more than a traditional craft – they are a vital vessel of Chinese culture. She upholds the spirit of literati painting in her ceramic work, striving to “convey the Tao through porcelain.” Striving to integrate the cultural depth of poetry, calligraphy, and painting into famille rose art, each one of her pieces of artwork possesses not only exquisite technical quality but also rich humanistic emotion. Her masterwork, The Twelve Beauties from Dream of the Red Chamber, captures the characters’ personalities with delicate, lifelike precision and refined famille rose beauty. The piece earned high praise from the late Redology scholar Feng Qiyong, who inscribed the phrase “Century-Long Fu Family Porcelain Paintings of Dream of the Red Chamber,” cementing the series as a landmark of contemporary famille rose figurative art.
In recent years, Fu has devoted much of her efforts to raising people’s understanding of Chinese ceramic culture around the world. In 2023, as a member of a Chinese arts delegation, she traveled to Egypt to take part in a cultural exchange, donating ceramic works to local universities and engaging with Egyptian artists in deep discussions on the development and innovation of ceramics. That same year, during his inspection tour of Jingdezhen, President Xi Jinping watched Fu creating a famille rose painting on-site. He encouraged her to carry forward China’s finest traditional culture while at the same time pursue innovation. These words become a vital source of inspiration to her, driving her continued dedication to ceramic arts.
In 2024, Fu presented her works at the China Today Intangible Cultural Heritage Pavilion during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, presenting the exquisite artistry of Jingdezhen famille rose to viewers who came from across the Arab world. This year, she participated in the “Jiangxi Day” in Sydney, Australia, and the “Jiangxi Activity Day” at the China Pavilion of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. Through live demonstrations of famille rose painting, she demonstrated to international audiences the unique allure of Chinese ceramic art – a craft “painted upon porcelain, forged in fire, and perfected by the artisan’s devotion.”
