Hong Kong: Real Concern Only from the Motherland
The Occupy Central movement has seriously affected Hong Kong’s rule of law. The famous Asian financial center has seen the emergence of anarchism, with blocked streets and police unable to perform their duties. The protestors exhibited arbitrary behavior and some people were injured during furious conflicts. Such events are astonishing to Asia and the rest of the world.
If the chaos continues, the only people who will sympathize with Hong Kong will be Chinese mainlanders. Some forces in Asia and the Western world applaud Hong Kong’s protestors, why not they?
The drama of Occupy Central can be exciting for bystanders. In their eyes, Hong Kong, a model society ruled by law, is finally sliding into chaos. Many places around the world have experienced chaos, and some are still in pandemonium today. So why isn’t Hong Kong one of them? In addition, Hong Kong’s chaos will trouble and attract the attention of the whole country. Therefore it is an immensely enjoyable spectacle for those who relish the misfortunes of others.
Ratings agencies have paid close attention to the situation in Hong Kong. If the Occupy Central movement continues, its international credibility will be negatively affected, seriously threatening Hong Kong’s status as a financial center. This is good news for Hong Kong’s competitors in Asia, who are delighted to see Hong Kong’s financial industry wane due to social instability.
Young participants of the Occupy Central movement should observe carefully. Their parents, relatives, friends and people with visions, and the Hong Kong government which is responsible for the well-being and prosperity of the city, all advise them to stop their action. No harm is meant to Hong Kong and the young students in the city. Over the past decade or so, Chinese mainlanders have been proud when Hong Kong has outperformed other regions in Asia, and worried when Hong Kong encountered problems.
Since the National Day holiday concluded, the Occupy Central movement has “cooled down.” Every society is immature in certain aspects. Young people are easily led astray by vicious forces at home and abroad. We sincerely hope that young students in Hong Kong will quickly understand and reflect upon the complicated situation, and that the latest feature of the situation is the result of their understanding and reflection.
Hong Kong is a relatively small society, but it is not isolated. It sits at the hub of the Asia-Pacific economy. Hong Kong can’t afford big mistakes, because the Western world will never feel pity for it. Hong Kong must maintain its status as a financial center without stumbling. Nobody in Hong Kong should harm the rule of law, the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s development in both its financial and tourist industries. It is something that is definitely worth maintaining and safeguarding by all the people of Hong Kong.
