A Trip to Enshi

A young tourist tries her hand at beating the huge drum in Enshi Chieftain City.

Travel Tips:

Transportation:

Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture is located in southwestern Hubei Province and is easily accessible.

By Air: Enshi Xujiaping Airport is 4.5 kilometers from the downtown area, nearer than the railway station. Currently many domestic airlines are available, including those linking Wuhan, Beijing, Shanghai, Yichang and Guangzhou.

By Train: The Yichang-Wanzhou Railway started operation in 2010, greatly boosting the development of Enshi’s economy and tourism.

By Coach: If you depart from Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chongqing or Yichang, it is more convenient to take a coach, with several choices and time schedules.

By Road: National Highway 209, National Highway 318 and G42 Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway reach Enshi. The newly opened G50 Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway provides another choice. Tourists from the east can depart from Wuhan to reach Enshi via G50 and those from the west can depart from Chongqing to reach Enshi via G50.

Climate:

Enshi has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, with short, warm winters and a cool summer. The place has much mist but little sunshine, with abundant rainfall and a hot rainy season. However the climate varies according to elevation. Usually Enshi is a good destination any time of the year.

Local Specialties:

Because of its special geographical location, the local cuisine has characteristics of both Sichuan and Hunan cuisine. The local specialties of Tujia and Miao ethnic groups attract many tourists, such as Hezha (a Tofu dish), cured meat and dried potato chips. In addition, Enshi abounds with tea, especially Yichang Black Tea and Selenium-rich Green Tea.
