CSR Wins US $2 Billion Loco Bid
CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd., one of China's top two train and rolling stock producers, signed on March 17 a contract with South African logistics company Transnet SOC Ltd. for the supply of electric locomotives valued at US $2.1 billion. This is the largest export order yet for China's rail transit vehicle sector.
Most of the six-axle locomotives, capable of hauling freight trains at up to a speed of 100 km per hour, will be used to transport coal and ore.
Although the biggest, this is not CSR's first deal in South Africa. In 2012, the Zhuzhou-based company won a bid to provide 95 electric locomotives to Transnet.
CSR Zhuzhou has so far gained orders from South Africa worth US $2.5 billion.
