Wang Guofa, a member of the CPPCC and former president of the Jilin Provincial Committee of CPPCC, suggested that the government should introduce a protective price for corn. "Jilin is a major agricultural province in China, with the grain yield reaching 32 billion kilograms last year, contributing greatly to our country's food supply," he said. "As a country with a huge population, China would not withstand taking food security lightly. To our delight, China's output of agricultural products has increased for eight straight years."
In recent years, the central authorities have put heavy emphasis on issues concerning agriculture, countryside and farmers . Currently the government implements protective prices for wheat and rice, but these do not cover corn. Wang told China Today that corn accounts for 70 percent of Jilin's total grain output. The corn produced in Jilin is featured with high quality, and with supply being short nowadays, its price has kept rising. However, there have often been periods where demand for corn was low and it was difficult to shift stores. Given the importance of corn to people's lives, Wang suggested the government introduce a minimum price for corn, so that local government and farmers do not have to make risky bets when it comes to corn production.
