Before she came to Beijing for the 2012 session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Tan Wenjing, a senior editor of Jieli Publishing House, received a call from her cousin who lives in countryside. Her cousin told her that many rural women are suffering from depression, putting a heavy economic burden on their families, which are mostly of lower incomes. Tan hopes that the government will establish a complete aid system to help disadvantaged groups in rural areas, while at the same time enhancing national strength and increasing fiscal revenue. "I think our government should look into the needs of these groups," said Tan.
