Chief Justice Vows to Improve Court Work

China's chief justice on Friday pledged greater efforts to improve court work this year to ensure effective implementation of the Constitution and laws.

As the socialist system of laws with Chinese characteristics has been established and laws are now in place to govern every sector of life, it is more important to guarantee the effective implementation of Constitution and laws, he said.

Wang Shengjun, president of the Supreme People's Court (SPC), made the remarks in a work report delivered at the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.

He acknowledged that a number of problems and difficulties still exist in court work under the "new situation."

These problems include trial work lagging behind the needs of economic and social development, quality and efficiency of trials needing further improvement, strong public complaint over judges' work style, and a few corrupt and prejudiced judges undermining judicial credibility.

In 2011, the SPC would give full play to the role of its ruling function to facilitate the transformation of the economic growth model, and provide judicial guarantee for the implementation of macro-economic policies, he said.

Further, it would be more responsive to issues of public concern, including public security, rights protection, and fairness and justice, to help maintain social harmony and stability, he said.

Wang said the SPC would try its utmost to meet people's needs for judicial services and hand out impartial rulings in legal cases.
