China Spending on Nanotechnology Pays Off

China's spending on developing nanotechnology over the past five years was more than three times that invested between 2001 and 2005. China dedicated over RMB 5 billion to related research between 2006 and 2010, compared to the previous Five Year Plan’s RMB 1.5 billion.

Three nanotechnology research centers at the national level were established with the funding, including the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology. The payout was that the number of patent applications in China concerning nanotechnology became the second largest made by any country in the world by 2009. Nanotechnology patent numbers increased from 4,600 in 2005 to 12,000 in 2009.

Wan Gang, minister of science and technology, said that China would design national nanotechnology programs in search of original breakthroughs during the next half decade. However, Bai Chunli, executive vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, warned that despite the progress made, China still faces several problems in developing nanotechnology, including insufficient understanding of the industrial demands for the technology.
