  • The 14th naval squad sent by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy repels a suspect target on March 21, 2013 during its mission to guard the eastern region of the Gulf of Aden. The first deployment took place on December 26 of 2008 in the form of escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters. It marked the first time the Chinese navy had carried out operational missions and escorted merchant ships in the Indian Ocean.

  • To mark International Mine Awareness Day and Assistance in Mine Action, on April 4, 2013 Chinese peacekeepers display land mines that they deactivated and removed in Naqoura, southern Lebanon. China has sent peacekeeping forces to 24 UN operations since 1990. As one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China has contributed the largest number of personnel to UN peacekeeping missions.

  • The China International Search & Rescue Team (CISAR) treats earthquake victims in Haiti on January 16, 2010. The team, established in 2001, has dispatched rescue workers on 12 occasions and carried out nine rescue missions in Algeria, Iran, Indonesia, Pakistan, Haiti, New Zealand and Japan.

  • Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao makes a speech on September 23, 2010 at the UN Millennium Summit at the UN headquarters in New York. Since 1978, 600 million Chinese people have risen above the poverty line and Chinese living conditions have gradually improved. China has achieved some of the UN Millennium Development Goals, especially those concerning income, education and healthcare, its focus being on less developed western regions.

  • Chinese President Hu Jintao makes a speech at the opening session of the UN Summit on Climate Change on September 22, 2009 entitled “Working Together to Meet Challenges of Climate Change.” In 2006, China announced that it would set out to reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP by 20 percent by 2010, compared with that of 2005. In 2007, China set up and implemented a national plan to tackle climate change, so becoming the first among developing countries to do so. In 2009, China announced its target of a 40-45 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per unit of GDP by 2020 off the 2005 level.
