| Punahou School News Release
This summer, 28 rising seniors from China and the United States will discover what it means to be a global leader. As participants in the first Student Global Leadership Institute (SGLI) at Punahou School, held from July 26 to August 6, the students will engage in two weeks of experiential learning and cultural exchange. The program aims to build an international cohort of student leaders who can effectively serve their communities.
“We are excited to launch the next chapter of Punahou School’s global-education program, which began more than 40 years ago,” says Hope Staab, Institute head and director of Wo International Center at Punahou School. “This summer, as we bring together student leaders from the U.S. and China to advance their 21st-century skills and global perspectives, we are eager to see how their diverse talents will shape the experience.”
SGLI participants represent eight schools -- four in China and four in the U.S. Chinese schools include Beijing Huiwen Middle School, High School Affiliated to Fudan University, High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China, and The Second High School Attached to Beijing Normal University. Participating U.S. schools include the Cary Academy (North Carolina), Phillips Exeter Academy (New Hampshire), Sidwell Friends School (Washington, D.C.), and host, Punahou School (Hawai‘i). In the future SGLI hopes to include student participants from Japan, Central and/or South America, Africa and the Middle East.
The project-based curriculum centers on addressing a service need in the students’ respective communities. Utilizing a custom-designed online network, participants have begun to explore this year’s content theme, which is water, with a focus on globalization and economics, environmental sustainability, leadership models, ethics and leadership, social responsibility and entrepreneurship, as well as multicultural perspectives.
