Some of the most noteworthy statistics of the day.

Athletics
- Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) won the Men’s 5000m, becoming the first athlete to win the Men’s 5000m and the Men’s 10,000m in the same Olympic Games since Miruts Yifter (ETH) performed the feat in 1980.

Football
- Argentina defended their Olympic Gold medal in the Men’s Football tournament, becoming only the fourth NOC to defend their Olympic Gold medal after Great Britain (1908, 1912), Uruguay (1924, 1928) and Hungary (1964, 1968).

Table Tennis
- China swept all medals in the Men’s Table Tennis to achieve a perfect Olympic. China also won all medals in Women’s Singles and the Gold in the Men’s and Women’s Team events. China has now won 20 of 24 Olympic Table Tennis Gold medals.

Volleyball
- Brazil won the Women’s Volleyball title, losing only one set. It is the second-fewest sets conceded in Olympic Women’s Volleyball. Only Japan in 1976 won the Olympic title without losing a single set.

Hockey
- With Netherlands, China, Argentina, Germany, Spain and Australia claiming the medals in the Men’s Hockey tournament, six different NOCs have won the medals in the Hockey competition at the Beijing Olympic Games. The Moscow 1980 Olympic Games were the only other Games in which six different NOCs accounted for the six medals awarded in the Men’s and Women’s competition.
