Some of the most noteworthy statistics of the day.

Swimming
- Kosuke Kitajima (JPN) became the first male swimmer to win two successive Gold medals in the same Breaststroke event since countryman Yoshiyuki Tsuruta won the 200m Breaststroke in 1928 and 1932.

- The USA Men's 4x100m Freestyle Relay team won Gold while improving on their own world record by 3.99sec., the second-biggest world record improvement in this event.

- For Michael Phelps (USA), it was the eighth Olympic Gold medal in his career, leaving him only one short of the all-time record held by Paavo Nurmi (FIN), Larissa Latynina (URS), Mark Spitz (USA) and Carl Lewis (USA).

- In the same event, Eamon Sullivan (AUS) swam an opening leg for Australia of 47.24sec., which will stand as an official world record.

- Rebecca Adlington (GBR) became the fourth British woman to win an Individual Swimming event, and the first since 1960.

-Federica Pellegrini (ITA) set the eighth world record in the Swimming competition, already equalling the total score of Athens 2004 in the same competition.


Shooting
- Satu Makela-Nummela (FIN) won Finland's 100th Olympic Gold medal when she triumphed in the Women's Trap Final.

- Abhinav Bindra (IND) won India's first Olympic Individual Gold medal when he won the Men's 10m Air Rifle Final.


Archery
- Italy won its 500th Olympic medal as the Archery Men's team took the Silver.


Fencing
- Maria Valentina Vezzali (ITA) became the first fencer to win the Gold medals in the same individual event as she won the Women's Individual Foil.
