Some of the most noteworthy statistics of the day
Equestrian
- Anky van Grunsven (NED) became the fifth woman in Olympic history to win three successive Gold medals in an individual event when she won Gold in the Equestrian Dressage Individual. She also tied the Dutch record for most Olympic medals (eight) held by swimmer Inge de Bruijn (NED).
Weightlifting
- China dominated Weightlifting, winning eight of 15 Gold medals. It is China’s highest number of Gold medals in Weightlifting at a single Olympic Games after winning five at both Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
Gymnastics
- Li Xiaopeng (CHN) and Zou Kai (CHN) secured China’s sixth and seventh event win in Men’s Gymnastics Artistic. Their seven event wins equals the Soviet Union’s record set at Melbourne 1956 and Seoul 1988.
Cycling – Track
- Chirs Hoy (GBR) won his fourth career Olympic Gold medal by winning the Cycling Track Men’s Sprint event, equaling the 104-year-old Olympic record of Marcus Hurley (USA). Hoy is now the second-most successful Olympian ever for Great Britain. Only Steve Redgrave (five Gold medals) has won more Olympic Gold medals for Great Britain.
