Some of the most noteworthy statistics of the day

Swimming
- Rebecca Soni (USA), Ryan Lochte (USA) and Michael Phelps (USA) all set world records, giving the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games their 20th world record in the Swimming competition.


Athletics
- Tirunesh Dibaba (ETH) won the Women’s 10,000m, marking the first Gold medal for an African NOC at the Beijing 2009 Olympic Games.


Canoe/ Kayak – Slalom
- Pavol Hochschorner (SVK) and Peter Hochschorner (SVK) became the most successful Olympians ever in Canoe/ Kayak – Slalom by taking their third career Gold medal on Friday. The pair triumphed in the Men’s C2.


Badminton
- China and Korea divided the medals between themselves yet again in the Women’s Doubles. Since this event was introduced on an Olympic level in 1992, these two NOCs have collected all available medals.


Gymnastics – Artistic
- Nastia Liukin (USA) won the Women’s Individual Allround event, succeeding Carly Patterson (USA) who had won the Gold in Athens in 2004. USA became the first NOC to retain the Olympic title in this event since Czechoslovakia in 1968.
