Unexpected Results in Asian Games

Unexpected Results in Asian Games

The Busan Asian Games closing ceremony.

Chinese athletes at the Busan Asian Games broke 13 world records, equalized 5, and won the largest number of medals of any nation. China performed particularly well in events that were formerly its weak points. The women's field hockey team defeated its ROK opponent twice, and won China's first gold medal in this event, and half of the 28 canoing and yachting event gold medals were bagged by China. In contrast, however, China suffered defeats in events at which it generally excels, such as table tennis and badminton. Results of the men's basketball and men and women's football were also disappointing. China even failed to bring home a gold medal from the Taekwando event, as it did from the 2002 Olympics.
