Hotel Fit for Emperors in Beijing

By SUN LI

The 10-story, 217-suite Grand Hotel Beijing is located to the east of Tian’anmen Rostrum and faces Chang'an Avenue. Its imperial style décor reflects that of the adjacent Forbidden City.

The Grand’s ambience is one of royal elegance and aristocratic service. The furniture in each guestroom is made of rosewood, and the walls are graced with paintings and works of classical calligraphy. The vermilion palace wall in the Red Wall Café on the second floor is an echo of the actual bygone imperial palace, and the indoor garden on the third floor is reminiscent of the Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace). The Zijin Room viewing platform gives a panoramic view of the Forbidden City.

The Grand’s general manager, Wang Fuhe, believes that it is the hotel’s Chinese classical elements that so charm its overseas senior clients, compelling them to stay here each time they visit Beijing.

The hotel has ample overseas contacts. Soon after opening it joined the well-known luxury hotel reservation association, Leading Hotels of the World. In 1999 it became the founding member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and also won the International Hotels and Restaurants Association Five Star Diamond Award.

Top Class Catering

As the Grand’s limited number of guestrooms confines its profit potential, Wang Fuhe concentrates on the hotel’s catering business as a means to keep financially ahead.

Wang explains, “The hotel’s catering business doesn’t depend on its guests but on its reputation among local gourmets. The Grand attracts members of political and business circles and certain celebrities. Its specialty (and registered trademark) “Yu Fu Royal Dish” has earned the Grand an annual RMB 75 million for six successive years, and constitutes 60 percent of its entire income. The hotel cafeteria has about 600 seats, each of which generates an annual income of RMB 147,000, well in excess of the RMB 90,000 figure regarded as the world standard catering profit. It is the Grand’s peerless cuisine and service that make its local customers happy and frequent diners at the hotel.”

Personalized Service

The Grand’s top-class five star service is further assured since creation of the position of Service Manager -- one that combines the duties of secretary and housekeeper -- to meet the specific needs of VIP customers.

Under the leadership of Wang Fuhe, the Grand Hotel Beijing highlights its distinct architectural features and catering excellence, while offering the friendly ambience of a smaller hotel.
