The BMX Biker

Essential regular maintenance.

No fear.

Abundant leisure pursuits.

Xiao An tightly grips his BMX’s handlebars as he soars through the air. He lands, rolls back over some rocks, pedals forwards again and “bunnyhops” over still more large stones. Then he steadies the bike. With a sudden jump from the pedals, and a quick flick of the wrist, he leaps into the air, spins the handlebars around, and lands back down on the pedals, all to the rapture of an onlooking crowd.

Xiao An is an ad design student at the South China Agricultural University. While flicking through the TV stations as a middle school student, he came across a BMX competition on a sports channel. Xiao An was so impressed by the bikers, and their spectacular stunts and tricks, that he decided to give it a try.

At first Xiao An lacked the funds to buy a BMX, so he customized his own bike as best he could. At that time, none of his friends shared his interest, so he had to teach himself with materials that he downloaded from the Internet. Day after day he would practice his tricks, until he got them right. Through his hobby, Xiao An learned that perseverance brings success.

In the six years since Xiao An started BMX biking, he doesn’t know how many times he has fallen off the bike. Nor can he remember the number of times his parents have complained about his hobby. But he has never given up, and he has saved hard to equip himself with expensive bikes and BMX accessories.

Xiao An now owns four bikes. With ease and can perform stunts like the wheelie, the back flip, the tail-whip and the bar-spin. Though he is an amateur, he still participates in BMX competitions. He might not win any prizes, but he still gets a lot out of the competitions.

Xiao An also likes to draw and fiddle with his camera. In his spare time, he might watch TV with his parents, go shopping with his girlfriend, or tease his dog, Lulu. Life, to him, is simple. But because of his passion for BMX biking, it’s also full of excitement and challenge.
