Growing
Up Alone
The sharp increase in the number of migrant workers
leaving the country means a huge number of minors in rural areas are being
reared by just one parent or their grandparents. More than 70 million
of children of migrant workers are at compulsory education age, yet in
some cases, they have been separated from their parents for more than
five years. A study carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture shows that
these children face difficulties regarding their security, living standard,
and physical and psychological well being. Often, children are left in
the charge of their grandparents, who cannot entirely take the place of
a parent. Psychologists say that growing up alone has negative impact
on a childs personality.
