Chinese Smokers Consume 1/3 of the World’s Cigarettes

The first-ever worldwide convention on controlling the use of tobacco came into effect on February 27. China, the 77th country to sign it, will implement a number of smoking related bans and restrictions. In the year 2000, the number of teen-age smokers reached 5 million, a figure that is expected to climb to 10 million this year. It is supposed that the annual death toll from smoking and smoking-related illnesses will rise from 1.16 million to 3.17 million between 2000 and 2030.
