Some 158 holders of masters degrees and doctorates registered for unemployment benefits in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, at the end of 2004. Most of them were local residents, of an average age of under 35 years. Despite having majored in highly sought after fields such as business management, software development, systems engineering, and mechanical engineering, six of them have been out of work since graduation.
