China Steps up Anti-gambling Campaign

In January 2005, China launched a 5-month government campaign to crack down on illegal gambling. The anti-gambling campaign is targeted at: agents in China for overseas casinos; gambling companies and gambling websites’ organizers of gambling activities such as the Mark Six Lottery and soccer and horserace betting; casino bosses and gambling organizers; cadres and officials within the Party and other public servants; and leaders of governmental organizations involved in gambling. It is reported that during Spring Festival 25 million yuan (US $ 3 million) in securities was seized at gambling venues in Henan Province, and that 292 Party members and cadres were punished for gambling.
