“Children’s Education” Second Main Savings Target

According to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Cultural Industry’s 2005 Development Report, “saving money for children’s education” is the second most common feature of Chinese people’s saving behavior.

Research conducted by the academy shows that in Chinese urban households the amount spent on cultural and educational matters is second only to food, while in rural households it is the next priority after food and housing.

A survey in China’s 10 largest cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, shows that putting money aside for children’s education is a universal feature of Chinese saving habits, along with “saving for a rainy day.”

These results indicate the importance that is attached to education, and the huge potential of the Chinese education market.
