China’s Largest Colored Sand Sculpture Competition

This competition was held from March 3 to 9, 2001 in Luliang County, Yunnan Province. It was sponsored by the World Sand Sculpture Association (WSSA), Yunnan Provincial Tourism Administration and the Qujing City People’s Government. The event was organized by Luliang County People’s Government and the Organizing Committee of the China International Sand Sculpture Competition, with the assistance of Qujing Cigarette Factory. Competitors were from the United States, Italy, Denmark and China. The sculptures were created from Luliang’s natural colored sands.

China’s Largest Theatrical Performance of “Maogusi”

The Maogusi is a dance ritual performed by people of the Tujia ethnic minority. It is based on folklore relating to the Tujia transition from a matrilineal to a patrilineal society. On September 22, 2002, the Maogusi was performed by 1,000 Tujia before an audience comprising participants in a China Folk Art Tour at the Zhangjiajie Ethnic Folklore Garden in Hunan Province. The dance reflects the daily life and work of the Tujia people in earlier times.

China’s Largest Purple Sand Pot

(Certificate issued in December 2000)

Perimeter: 5.76 meters

Weight: 980 kilograms

Capacity: 2.76 cubic meters

This project was masterminded by the Tianmuhu Tourism Company in Liyang City, Jiangsu Province. The pot was made by Liu Genlin and more than a dozen other artisans. Its manufacture entailed 1.5 tons of purple sand and took seven months to complete.

Architecture

China’s Tallest Tilted House --- “Empyrean Hereditary Hall”

Floor space: 811 square meters

This tilted house is in the Tujia Ethnic Folklore Garden in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. It is made entirely of wood without a single iron nail. The 12-story wooden structure houses more than 10,000 cultural relics, including daily life utensils, weapons and production tools. It is administered by the Zhangjiajie Tujia Ethnic Folklore Garden.
