China’s Philanthropists Thin on the Ground

Just 30 percent of the Forbes 2003 Chinese rich list that appear on the Forbes 2004 honor roll of Chinese philanthropists come from China’s mainland, their charitable donations accounting for a mere fraction of their total assets.

A full 70 percent of donations received by China’s largest philanthropic group, the China Charity Federation, comes from abroad, Hong Kong and Taiwan, while those from inland China amount to less than 15 percent. China’s wealthy elite is now being called upon to take on greater social responsibility.
