Ostentation Propels Luxury Consumption

Since first entering the Chinese market in 2002, Bentley has sold 85 limousines and created three records: largest sales volume in the Asia-Pacific Region, largest sales growth in the world, and highest Bentley 728 sales volume in the world. The unit price on 19 of the limousines sold in China exceeded US $1 million.

China’s economic boom over the past two decades has generated a handful of millionaires and billionaires whose “ostentatious consumption” of cars, watches and garments has boosted China’s luxury commodity market. It is, however, believed that the major driving force behind China’s luxury consumption is its 13 million middle class rather than the moneyed few.
