China to Tax Textile Exports in 2005

The Ministry of Commerce has announced eight measures to ensure healthy development of China’s textile exports once the global textiles market is liberalized in 2005. They are: (1) Levying an export tax on certain textile products to encourage high added-value product exports. (2) Reinforced government support of enterprises through timely distribution of export information; (3) Circulating textile industry investment growth information, assisting in risk management and avoiding over-investment in the sector; (4) Encouraging enterprises to invest overseas by providing trade convenience and policy support; (5) Bringing the role of intermediary organs into full play (6) Promoting ISO9000 quality control and ISO14000 environmental protection standards in line with international practice; (7) Encouraging enterprises to develop and cultivate their own brands and increase investment in research, development and design; and (8) Strengthening bilateral and multilateral dialogues between governments, industrial organizations and enterprises in order to further cooperation and safeguard the interests of Chinese enterprises.
