Government Officials to Forgo “No Comment” Line

A circular issued by the municipal government forbids government officials at various levels of the Beijing Municipality to answer journalists’ questions with the phrase “no comment.” They are now required to take a more active stance on news coverage.

The circular also requires various districts, counties and departments to collect and sort out news items and make timely reports to the news media, in cooperation with journalists. Such a circular is rare within local governments.
