200,000 Faces Ravaged by Cosmetic Surgery in a Decade

According to China Consumer Association statistics, in the past decade approximately 20,000 faces have been damaged by incompetently executed cosmetic surgery annually. Fan Jincai, director of the cosmetic surgery department of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Plastic Surgery Hospital, revealed that 50 to 60 percent of his patients come to him for rectification of botched cosmetic surgery.

Fan Jincai attributed this phenomenon to incompetence on the part of beauty salon surgeons who are neither qualified nor licensed to perform such operations. The Ministry of Health began issuing plastic surgery certification last year, and the total number of licensed plastic surgeons in China is now only 1,000. There are nevertheless thousands of people eager to undergo cosmetic surgery.
