China Ranks Second in Electronics Sales

Figures from the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry (CMII) show that sales in China's electronic sector reached 1.88 trillion yuan (US $226.5 billion) in 2003, surging 34 percent from the previous year. China currently ranks second in electronics sales, after the United States. Rapid growth in this sector has promoted China's GDP. The proportion of IT industry added value increased from 3 percent in 2002 to 4 percent in 2003, and its contribution to national economic growth increased from 0.39 percent in 2002 to 0.64 percent in 2003. The volume of imports and exports of the IT industry makes up 32 percent of China's total.
